More on FPS
I am going to post a few additional things here regaurding this subject.
You can not hurt your monitor by not using vsync if FPS is higher than refresh rate. The FPS is measured at the video card not the monitor. The video card can pump all the FPS it wants BUT the monitor only refreshes at the rates it can. It is possible to have a distorted picture at crazy high FPS, although this is seldom the case. When using multiple video cards (SLI) the 1st video card displayes the top half of the screen and the 2nd displays the lower half. Vsync helps maintain a "seamless picture" in this case. If you are using multiple video cards that can hit high FPS without vsync on you can experience "tearing". Tearing happens when the 2 cards are refreshing different frames. It looks like the picture is torn. vsync solves this. Some people claim in 1st person shooters that tearing is ok because it gives them an edge. I do not know as I seldom play 1st person shooters. Remember though kids, some people still think the earth is flat. You can hurt a monitor by forcing it to refresh faster than it is supposed to. lcd=60 crt=75 *unless other wise specifide by manufacturer The only time I have EVER forced a monitor to refresh above the specifide rate was to extend the life of a dieing monitor. This is a short lived, destructive fix. It will sometimes allow for use untill the new 1 arrives. THIS will HURT the monitor and under normal operation should NEVER be done. |
